If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.
I love this quote! It reminds me so much of parenting. How often do we find ourselves doing things that don’t work, but we keep on doing them? In our recorded course, Managing Your Child’s Bid for Power, we actually talk about how some parents dig themselves into a hole by engaging in power struggles with their children. The problem? The child starts seeing the parent as incompetent and the parent starts feeling incompetent!
This is a good reminder for me today… The hole I have been digging myself into is one of indecisiveness. I tend to talk out loud (no, I don’t answer myself yet!!!) and have been throwing out various options on what to do next to my 4 year old daughter. Of course, this is okay if I really intend to give her these options, but I find that I am saying them before I have really decided if I want or can do them.
I am going to stop digging my hole now. How are you digging yourself into a hole?
